8th Grade Academy Inspires Creativity in Students

It was the excitement to grow as a writer that led Sanai, an 8th-grade student at Urban Assembly Unison to join Citizen Schools 8th Grade Academy. She was a member of multiple apprenticeships, and the staff was impressed by her work ethic and creativeness. Sanai was offered the chance to participate in 8th Grade Academy with like-minded peers.She credits 8GA for helping her develop as a writer and preparing her for high school with the deadlines.

On Friday, June 23 Citizen Schools NY celebrated the incredible service of our AmeriCorps service members who are the heart and soul of the work we do in schools. It was a powerful evening for us to gather together and honor our AmeriCorps,  member's many accomplishments and deepen our network strength! We are thankful to have a group of amazing service fellows that served our nearly 500 students day in and day out.

Inside Citizen Schools A Documentary Film

Since 2015, the staff at Cavelight Films, a New York-based production company, have led apprenticeships inspiring students to be creative, while teaching technical skills exercised in the film production field. Last spring, Jordan Ehrlich -(Cavelight Films) and Caitlin McNally -( National Geographic) guided students through a 10-week Documentary filming class at the Urban Assembly Unison Middle School in Brooklyn.  The students had the opportunity to create a documentary that showcased Citizen Schools programing at Urban Assembly Unison Middle School.

TF Spotlight: Marisely Hernandez

Having attended NYC public schools throughout elementary, middle, and high school, I was able to experience a wide variety of schools across different communities within the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. My middle school years were some of my toughest years. At the time, there were many changes going on within my personal life that negatively affected my behavior toward my grades and schoolwork. In part, I owe my decision to become an AmeriCorps Teaching Fellow to my middle school guidance counselor who continuously pushed me to grow.

Trump’s proposed AmeriCorps cuts would trim .03 percent of the federal budget — but slash support at 11,000 schools

Through another AmeriCorps program, Citizen Schools, 41 corps members act as teaching fellows in high-needs middle schools in Harlem and Brooklyn, where they also help mobilize community partners to volunteer, said Wendy Lee, executive director of Citizen Schools NY.

“Our entire operating model is based on having AmeriCorps service members in schools,” Lee said. If funding were cut, she said, “We’d either have to rethink staffing or rethink the way our model is delivered.”

Apprenticeship Recap: Intro to Debate with Skadden

Since fall 2014, attorneys and staff at Skadden, a New York-based law firm with 22 offices worldwide, have led apprenticeships at Citizen Schools, inspiring students to dream big while teaching practical skills exercised in the legal field. Last fall, a dozen Skadden personnel guided students through a 10-week Introduction to Debate class at the Urban Assembly Academy for Future Leaders School in West Harlem.
