This year, Citizen Schools Massachusetts welcomed eight returning and six new AmeriCorps Teaching Fellows (TFs). This year’s TFs come from a diverse range of personal and professional experiences, united by their deep commitment to public service and social justice for the 300+ students we are serving at our three partner middle schools in Somerville.
At a special event on Friday, June 14th, Citizen Schools New York celebrated the powerful service of our AmeriCorps service members. The evening was filled with reflections and recognition of those who set the bar high. We are filled with gratitude for all that our Teaching Fellows have achieved at their time at Citizen Schools. Thank you for your service!
At Citizen Schools, no role is more essential to the success of our students than that of the AmeriCorps Teaching Fellow. Citizen Schools National Teaching Fellows create extraordinary enrichment and academic support experiences for the students we serve the nation. On a daily basis, Fellows deepen connections between schools and parents, help to develop social-emotional skills through mentoring and coaching students, and facilitate hands-on learning opportunities through our apprenticeships.
Here at Citizen Schools New York, December is when our students get to showcase what they have learned in their 10-week apprenticeships, while their volunteer Citizen Teachers get to say WOW! At our semi-annual Google MegaWOW!, 75 students across our four schools were able to showcase their final products to more than 20 Citizen Teachers, 30 staff members, 25 guest and other special guests.
I decided to be an AmeriCorps Teaching Fellow because I genuinely love children. I wanted to learn from the students and well as my teaching and assisting the CT's during the apprenticeship. I remember teachers checking me and making sure I was on a path of success and that is what I want to contribute as well. It's funny because I still remember some of the analogies and life lessons that my elementary teachers taught me.
