Congratulations to the Presidential Volunteer Service Award Winners!

As we say here at Citizen Schools, it takes a village to serve our students. Among the leaders in that village are volunteer Citizen Teachers, who play a critical role in introducing students to engaging opportunities and diverse careers. During the 2015-2016 school year, over 2,300 Citizen Teachers taught more than 1,000 apprenticeships, impacting over 5,300 students across our network.

Each year, The President of the United States recognizes those who volunteer for causes across the country through the President’s Volunteer Service Awards. Hundreds of our Citizen Teachers are among the recipients.  For some, this is their very first honor. For others, it is part of a collection of Presidential Awards, representing the many semesters they have returned to teach. For all, this is a testament to their civic leadership.

This year, 398 volunteer Citizen Teachers received recognition from the President at the gold, silver, and bronze award levels. Each level corresponds to a specific level of engagement - and reflects an incredible investment in the students we serve:

  • 67 Gold award winners for teaching four of the past four semesters
  • 83 Silver award winners for teaching three of the past four semesters
  • 248 Bronze award winners for teaching two of the past four semesters

Volunteers from our National Leadership Partners (Biogen, Cisco, Cognizant, and Fidelity Investments) accounted for 45  awards, and 80 of our partner companies were represented in the overall total.

We are celebrating these volunteers around the network throughout the summer at WOW!s and at Citizen Teacher social events. This award is a meaningful way to reinforce the impact Citizen Teachers have on the community, and a way to show our appreciation for their commitment to sharing their knowledge and passion with students.

Congratulations to the 2014 Presidential Volunteer Service Award Winners!

The President of Citizen Schools, Emily McCann, uses the phrase "it takes a village" to demonstrate the amount of talent and dedication needed to create the impact that Citizen Schools has on students. Among the ‘village’ of talent and dedication are our volunteer Citizen Teachers. During the 2013-2014 school year there were over 2,500 Citizen Teachers leading about 1,000 apprenticeships, impacting over 4,900 middle school students across 7 states!   From September to May these volunteers give their time to middle school students, mentoring them on topics such as video game design, mock trial, stock market investments and more. After one semester in the classroom, hundreds of volunteers go on to teach again, for several semesters and even years in a row.

While we celebrate the end of the school year and thank our Citizen Teachers, there is one more individual that extends his gratitude for their service, the President of the United States. Each year, the President recognizes those who volunteer for a cause across the country with the President's Volunteer Service Award program.

This year, 375 Citizen Teachers were recognized by the President at the gold, silver and bronze levels. Each of the levels corresponds to an incredible amount of time inspiring students:

43 Gold award winners for teaching four out of the last four semesters

71 Silver award winners for teaching three out of the last four semesters

261 Bronze award winners for teaching two out of the last four semesters

Throughout the summer, volunteers received their awards at appreciation events across the country. Many companies and organizations have also recognized the great efforts of their employees at the appreciation events and internally.

In particular, we would like to thank the 43 gold level awardees who have made the commitment for four consecutive semesters to consistently impact students in their community. Why I Keep Coming Back for More

Ed Lau is a Technical Account Manager at Microsoft in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is a six-time Citizen Teacher with Citizen Schools. This is adapted from a speech he gave at the Celebrating Community Collaboration benefit event. 

I was actually first roped into volunteering by a co-worker. At first, it seemed like an interesting opportunity to get out, interact with my peers in a non-work setting, and get in some professional development time. Once I taught that first semester, my view on Citizen Schools changed. Little did I when I signed up to co-teach an “apprenticeship” class to middle school students that I would come back to do it again, and again.

ed2Three years later, I have taught six apprenticeships with a group of colleagues, teaching middle school students in Charlotte, North Carolina the ins and outs of computers and how technology impacts their lives. During that first semester, one of the students came up to me and told me that she wanted to come work for Microsoft one day. It gave me a great sense of pride and I decided then that I would keep volunteering with Citizen Schools.

Now, the past few years haven’t been easy. Keeping a room full of middle school students in line takes a lot of work! If anything, I’ve developed a huge appreciation for the teachers that do this role every day.

Last fall, I wasn’t sure if I could keep giving the level of energy necessary for leading an apprenticeship and I considered retiring as a Citizen Teacher. Then, at the end of the semester when the students from all of the apprenticeship classes have a chance to present what they learned during the program, I browsed the other presentations. I stepped into one presentation for the “Brand You” apprenticeship. In this class, each student had to make their own personal brand slides, showing their own interests, career goals, and how they were going to accomplish them. One of the students I taught during the semester was also part of this class and he had put “work for Microsoft” as his goal.

Despite all of the challenges and hardships, I had managed to reach at least one student that semester. That experience once again changed my mind and gave me a reason to keep coming back.

There is always at least one student each semester that will internalize the experience and make important life, education, and career changes based on it. I come back each semester to reach that one student and shape his or her future. For that one student, I will happily volunteer my time

Citizen Schools has made a huge impact on students in Charlotte and across the country. You can get involved in shaping the lives of students by signing up teach an apprenticeship in the fall. But take it from me, you might never want to stop.

Corporate Employees Stepping Up to Teach

This spring, over 1,500 volunteer Citizen Teachers are teaching nearly 500 apprenticeships across the country. About 60 percent of those apprenticeships are being taught by volunteers from partner organizations and almost 300 Citizen Teachers come from ten companies: Google, Cisco, Fidelity, Cognizant, Bank of America, EMC, AOL, Facebook, Microsoft, and Hewlett Packard. These corporate volunteers are teaching our students about electrical engineering, investing, creating and marketing products, the science in baking, documentary filmmaking, LED technology, and so much more.

In New York, 230 sixth grade students from East Harlem and the Bronx visit the Google NY headquarters each week. Google is offering a wide range of exciting apprenticeships this semester including “Gourmet Google,” which looks at the cultural, biological, and economic aspects of food.

In North Carolina, Cisco employees are leading the “Brand You/Networking 101” apprenticeship, which teaches students about key marketing and business concepts. Cisco is also offering a math focused apprenticeship, “Building Blocks with Math,” which focuses on the fundamentals of math and design through the creation of 2D and 3D scalable models.

These are just a few examples of the tremendous learning opportunities our students are exposed to thanks to the support of our partners and Citizen Teachers. Learn more about how your company can get involved.

Jane Long Middle School joins elite corps of Innovative Schools in more than 46 countries

Houston, TX — January 27, 2011 — Today Microsoft Partners in Learning is announcing a new class of Pathfinder and Mentor Schools, which will be joining the Innovative Schools Program, part of Microsoft’s 10-year $500M initiative to help teachers and school leaders more effectively use technology as a tool for teaching and learning. Houston’s Jane Long Middle School was chosen after a rigorous global application process, and joins a global community of 80 schools in 46 countries.  Over the course of the next 12 months, Microsoft will work with educational experts to help Pathfinder Schools through a process of whole-school transformation, aimed at creating a community that is focused on innovative teaching and learning practice.   The Innovative Schools Program is based on the notion that innovative teachers can only thrive with system-level support, so the program gives school leaders the opportunity to learn from other leaders from around the world, as well as from educational experts. With the support of visionary leadership, schools can become more innovative learning environments for students.    Over the last three years, dozens of schools around the world have participated in the Innovative Schools Program.  For example, within seven months of being part of the Pathfinder Program, a school in Lithuania realized the technology use in the school dramatically changed with peer coaching, taking many of the teachers from ‘scared of technology’ to advanced users. Ultimately it is the students in a school who benefit from such a shift 

Jane Long Middle School was chosen as a Pathfinder School because of its innovative expanded learning time partnership with Citizen Schools, a national nonprofit that runs programs in Houston, Austin and seventeen other cities across the country.  The school partners with Citizen Schools to lengthen the school day for all sixth graders by nearly three hours each day, adding extra time for academic support and hands-on, project-based learning, including 10-week “apprenticeships” with local professionals.   Jane Long Middle School is the first school in the Houston Independent School District to implement Citizen Schools Extended Learning Time model, paving the way for other schools to see how a public school can partner with a second shift of educators to increase learning time, close the achievement gap, and make connections between current learning and future opportunities.   Ultimately, the Pathfinder Schools are selected because they can serve as regional exemplars for integrating innovative teaching and learning into the whole school environment. These schools can influence other schools within their own community, country and around the world.  To be chosen, the Pathfinder Schools have proven that they have community and professional support for the change process and strong school-level leadership.  Leaders at these schools have articulated a vision for what they want to achieve, and the Pathfinder Schools Program will help the school leaders refine the vision, make it stronger and implement it.   After the year-long engagement, some Pathfinder Schools are invited to “graduate” to become Mentor Schools, giving them the opportunity to share the knowledge they gained as Pathfinder Schools with other schools in their country, region and around the world.    The 54 new Pathfinder Schools and 16 new Mentor Schools are part of the Microsoft Partners in Learning Innovative Schools Program, which is designed to help school leaders become change agents within their school communities by providing the tools and resources they need to successfully envision and implement educational transformation.

Citizen Schools, in partnership with expanded learning time partner Jane Long Middle School in Houston, TX, was chosen after a rigorous global application process,  and joins a global community of 80 schools in 46 countries.  Over the course of the next 12 months, Microsoft will work with educational experts to help the schools through a process of whole-school transformation, aimed at creating a community that is focused on innovative teaching and learning practice. Citizen Schools and Jane Long Middle School were chosen as a Pathfinder School because of their innovative expanded learning time partnership that lengthens the school day for all sixth graders by nearly three hours each day, adding extra time for academic support and hands-on, project-based learning.

The Innovative Schools Program is based on the notion that innovative teachers can only thrive with system-level support, so the program gives school leaders the opportunity to learn from other leaders from around the world, as well as from educational experts. Participants traveled to South Africa late last year to kick off the program.  Mandy Haeuser, Program Director for Citizen Schools Texas, and Diana De La Rosa, Principal at Jane Long Middle School, joined educators from across the globe to learn and share best practices.

“The school visits in South Africa were really pivotal, “ said Haeuser.  “The opportunity to be exposed to projects and programs led by different schools and teachers around the world is phenomenal.”   Ultimately, the schools are selected because they can serve as regional exemplars for integrating innovative teaching and learning into the whole school environment. These schools can influence other schools within their own community, country and around the world.  Leaders at these schools have articulated a vision for what they want to achieve, and the program will help the school leaders refine the vision, make it stronger and implement it.

“This program will allow us to better document the phases of the expanded learning model,” said De La Rosa. “It will lead to a greater effort to collect and use data, making this thing sustainable and helping us expand to other grades.”
