On February 8, 2018, over 40 Volunteers from more than 20 Businesses in the Bay Area gathered at Greenleaf Elementary School in Oakland, California to take part in our annual 6 Degrees of the Bay Area networking event! Students had the chance to network with professionals from fields ranging from Architecture, Computer Science, and Human Resources to name a few.
On February 1st , Citizen Schools, in partnership with sponsors Belk Inc., General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products, Inc., Piedmont Natural Gas, The NASCAR Foundation, and Green Leaf Events, hosted “Six Degrees of Charlotte” at the Nascar Hall of Fame. This exciting event provided our eighth grade students an opportunity to “practice by doing” their self-marketing, oral communication, and networking skills with Charlotte area professionals.
“There’s great value for the adults to meet students, and as much, if not more, for the students to meet adults,” stated Karl Rectanus, Leader, North Carolina Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Community Collaborative and Citizen Schools North Carolina (Durham) Advisory Board member. This year’s event was a huge success with over 150 community professionals in attendance. Including our live twitter feed, we reached over 30,000 individuals via this one event alone!
Attendee Johnnie Jones, Computer Science Corporation, said that he “wanted to get involved to offer expertise and make a difference to students.” We’re grateful to the Charlotte community, our sponsors, and our students and staff for an outstanding event.
