U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich Visits Citizen Schools

Citizen Schools New Mexico was proud to host U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich from New Mexico’s 1st Congressional district at Van Buren Middle School in Albuquerque on April 29th.  The Citizen Schools and school community demonstrated what expanding the learning day and innovation look like in action.  Rep. Heinrich met with Citizen Schools’ students, who presented what they had learned through their apprenticeship solving a murder case based on proceedings from the American Mock Trial Association. 

“The extended learning experience is important, but it’s also about teaching kids to be critical thinkers,” Rep. Heinrich said.  “They’re addressing real-world problems here and not just memorizing data and numbers.”  Rep. Heinrich identified Citizen Schools as a model innovative practice for authentic learning and reform that is much needed in the New Mexico education field.
