The Power of Community: Annie Ransom & Rio School District

At Citizen Schools, we know that lasting change in education happens when teachers, volunteers, and community partners work side by side to expand what’s possible for students. Annie Ransom, a dedicated science and ELD teacher in Oxnard’s Rio School District, has been an extraordinary example of this collaboration in action. Over the years, Annie has worked hand in hand with our program team and a network of volunteer mentors to design experiences that make learning more engaging, relevant, and empowering for her students.

Through her partnership with Citizen Schools, Annie has opened the door for students to explore complex topics like sustainability and environmental stewardship through hands-on projects led by mentors from diverse professional backgrounds. These connections help students see real-world applications of what they’re learning and build a sense of belonging in the broader community. With Annie’s guidance and our volunteers’ expertise, classrooms have become spaces where curiosity leads to action and where every student has the chance to see themselves as a capable problem-solver.

Annie’s leadership has not only transformed her classroom but has also contributed to district-wide recognition, including the U.S. Department of Education’s 2024 Green Ribbon Sustainable District Award. This achievement reflects the shared commitment between Annie, Citizen Schools, and community partners to create learning environments that are both academically rich and socially impactful.

Her approach is rooted in the belief that experiential learning thrives when teachers have strong support systems. By working with our program team, Annie has been able to collaborate with volunteers, refine hands-on projects, and integrate real-world problem-solving into her curriculum. Together, we’ve been able to bring the power of community directly into her classroom, giving students experiences that ignite both their minds and their sense of purpose.

Annie’s story is proof that the magic happens when educators and Citizen Schools work in partnership. Through shared vision, resources, and relationships, we are able to expand opportunities for students—ensuring that they not only master academic skills but also develop the confidence, creativity, and resilience they’ll need for the future. In Annie’s work, we see the true power of community: a united effort to inspire, empower, and prepare the next generation.
