Citizen Schools TX’s Fall ’13 Apprenticeships and WOW! Events

The staff at Citizen Schools’ TX has been working hard alongside our dedicated volunteers (Citizen Teachers) to provide exemplary and applicable real-world skills for our students through our apprenticeship program this fall. These apprenticeships occur twice weekly at each of our four campuses: Patrick Henry Middle School, Fondren Middle School, Edison Middle School and Jackson Middle School. The individual apprenticeships, led by our volunteers, and aided by teaching staff, will culminate in our big end of semester celebrations called WOW!s, where our students teach back what they have learned in apprenticeships to the community. Citizen Schools TX’s WOW! events will feature apprenticeships taught by volunteers representing Wells Fargo, The Society of Women Engineers, Rice University, South Texas College of Law, the Society of Women Engineers, Boy Scouts of America, Houston Public Library, Shell Energy, The Women’s Fund, NASA, various engineering firms, publishing outfits, and others.

At Patrick Henry, a hands-on banking apprenticeship is being taught by Alan Watkins (pictured above), Community Development Officer at Wells Fargo. Students are learning to speak the language of personal finance and build an understanding of financial planning and decision making. Students are also being taught important strategies on how to spend and save money. In the upcoming WOW! for Hands-On Banking, teams of students will advise WOW! participants on how to develop a financial plan.
