Coming Together to Support Buffalo and Beyond

Donations or volunteer opportunities to local organizations encouraged

At Citizen Schools, we are all distraught at the massacre that occurred in Buffalo, NY, and our hearts continue to go out to the families, friends and communities impacted by this tragic event. Sadly, this is occurring more often than not and we know that occurrences like this have a deep impact on the local communities, our staff, and all those touched by the work at Citizen Schools.

We encourage our community to continue to check-in on each other—these types of events impact some people more than others. Ask, “how are you doing?” or try “if you want to talk about it, I am here.”

We also recognize that acknowledging the pain of this event is not enough. We need to be proactive in helping the communities impacted by this tragedy. We hope you, a member of our community, will take a moment to volunteer or make a donation to nonprofits that are currently serving the communities impacted by the tragedy, or nonprofits that work daily to fight injustice in their community, specifically those based in Buffalo and led by BIPOC leaders.

Here are a few to look into:

  • Buffalo Survivors Fund: Organized by the National Compassion Fund, you can donate directly to this Go Fund Me page

  • Feed Buffalo: Feed Buffalo is a black woman-led organization that creates access to healthy food in a judgment-free space.

  • Black Love Resists in the Rust: The organization organizes at the intersections of embodied leadership, healing justice, political education and transformational organizing.

The recent event in Buffalo and many other events across the country remind us that we live in a society in which low-income, immigrant, and communities of color face daily harm and deep institutional barriers. Please support one another, let us know how we can best support you and share any additional resources to navigate these challenging times.
