East Somerville celebrated our fifth WOW! with a student-chosen theme of “Saturday Morning Cartoons.” Students, families, school administration, and community members joined together to learn more about game design, finances, and design thinking—to name a few. The young apprentices were able to practice presentation and leadership skills during the booth portion of the night. Following the demonstrations were the raffle prizes for parents and students and the fan favorite—chicken and waffles for dinner! With happy (and relieved) faces and full bellies, this marked another successful WOW! season that couldn’t have been possible without the generous Somerville community, hard working students, Citizen Teachers and all the donors who jumped at the opportunity to celebrate the Citizen Schools family.

The Fall WOW! at Argenziano was a success! Parents watched as Lego robots navigated through a paper neighborhood created by students in the Google Apprenticeship. Students in the Maker Challenge Apprenticeship led family members in science experiments, and students in the Beautiful Children Apprenticeship taught attendees how to make a stress ball and sample homemade face-masks. Students in the Pencil Code Apprenticeship showcased interactive computer games they had created with code. Guests enjoyed fantastic performances of monologues by Mr. Fane's Xpress Yourself club, as well as a Korean-Pop dance showcase. Congratulations to Argenziano students Suyog, Lucas, Wis, and Manushi; who won of Citizen Schools Student Awards presented by our Teaching Fellows. Thank you to our students, families, friends and staff for making our Sweet & Sour-themed WOW! extra sweet!

Need a crime scene investigator? How about a superhero designer? Or a dancer? The Winter Hill 80’s-Themed WOW! had it all!  Students overtook an entire hallway to lead guests in wacky science experiments and pitch the ideas that will create tomorrow’s tech. Braving the bright yellow caution tape, guests dusted their fingerprints and solved an elusive crime with our CSI class, while learning about all the CSI jobs they don’t show on TV. Down the hallway, Life is a Lab students engaged guests with the groovy science behind their homemade lava lamps and robotic hands. Meanwhile, Super Design students suited up to teach guests about their superhero creations designed to help communities fight real-world problems. Our Start Up Tech class, fresh off a successful WOW! at Fidelity Investments, shared their cutting-edge ideas with the crowd. To top off the night, our student ushers escorted guests to the cafeteria where they were treated to two dazzling Haitian Dance performances from students across four grades. The grace and fun our dancers brought to the stage earned them the Fan Favorite Award while CSI nabbed the Best Presentation Prize. A big thanks to our students, volunteers, and school for bringing our community together for a night of learning and fun!
