Norwell lawyer teams with Citizen Schools

Every week, Norwell resident Michael Bevilacqua goes to work at the law firm WilmerHale, and spends time teaching middle school students from around Boston how to present a case to a judge.

“At the beginning, they don’t want to stand up in front of the class,” he said. “It’s amazing to see what they gain by the end of it. The shyest of them has enough confidence to stand up in front of the judge.”

I decided to be an AmeriCorps Teaching Fellow because I genuinely love children. I wanted to learn from the students and well as my teaching and assisting the CT's during the apprenticeship. I remember teachers checking me and making sure I was on a path of success and that is what I want to contribute as well. It's funny because I still remember some of the analogies and life lessons that my elementary teachers taught me.

Volunteer wins award for education efforts

Corey Cronin of Novato has received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for work as a “citizen teacher” with the national nonprofit Citizen Schools.

The group partners with middle schools to provide academic support to children in low-income communities, in conjunction with AmeriCorps educators and the volunteer teachers.

Cronin was a silver award honoree, which recognizes volunteers who have taught three of the past four semesters. Across the country, 83 volunteers were recognized in this category.

8th Grade Academy Inspires Creativity in Students

It was the excitement to grow as a writer that led Sanai, an 8th-grade student at Urban Assembly Unison to join Citizen Schools 8th Grade Academy. She was a member of multiple apprenticeships, and the staff was impressed by her work ethic and creativeness. Sanai was offered the chance to participate in 8th Grade Academy with like-minded peers.She credits 8GA for helping her develop as a writer and preparing her for high school with the deadlines.

On Friday, June 23 Citizen Schools NY celebrated the incredible service of our AmeriCorps service members who are the heart and soul of the work we do in schools. It was a powerful evening for us to gather together and honor our AmeriCorps,  member's many accomplishments and deepen our network strength!
