In this apprenticeship, students will learn how to teach and practice yoga. They will learn basic anatomy, poses, flows & teaching techniques, as well as the benefits of practice for mental and physical health. Through practical experience, writing reflection and discussion, students will gain an understanding about how practicing yoga can enhance their individual lives. Through modeling, lessons, and meeting with an expert yoga teacher, students will learn how to teach yoga and to share this understanding with others. By the end of the apprenticeship, students will be able to teach others an introductory yoga class and answer questions on the benefits of yoga.
Students will learn ways to identify stress and how to manage it in a healthy way. The students will develop stress relief techniques during the course.
You might know how to play soccer, but you've never thought of it like this before. Students will explore the scientific aspects of the game and how it may improve their performance on the field.
Rugby is a game of fast paced action in a team environment. Students will learn to think critically in order to solve problems and challenges. The Rookie Rugby Apprenticeship is a comprehensive, ten-week program that will engage students through physical activity and education.
Students will learn healthy eating habits and participate in weekly cook-off challenges. Students will be able to show how they made their recipes and why they are healthy.
This apprenticeship is designed to help students observe, ask questions, and think like a scientist by doing delicious food science experiments leading to an understanding of how ice cream is created. With their understandings and questions about the science behind ice cream making, they will create a video dispelling misconceptions about science and testing hypotheses of their own. Throughout each experiment and experience, students will learn about what chemists, cooks, and scientists do in their research and how they can be scientists and experimenters in their own kitchens.
The Feed Me Better apprenticeship prepares Citizen Schools’ students to become knowledgeable advocates to their schools, communities and parents about the importance of (and need for) healthful and nutritious foods in their daily diet. Citizen Schools’ students build math and presentation skills as they gain knowledge regarding how to prepare and choose foods that are not only nutritious but also delicious.
This healthy eating and nutrition apprenticeship prepares Citizen Schools’ students to become knowledgeable advocates to their schools, communities and parents about the importance of (and need for) healthful and nutritious foods in their daily diet. Citizen Schools’ students build excellent oral communication skills as they gain knowledge regarding how to prepare and choose foods that are not only nutritious but also delicious. Students will review the WOW! menu and make recommendations to campus leadership on how to improve the menu as a demonstration of all they’ve learned.
In this apprenticeship designed by UNC-Charlotte Psychology Department, young ladies will have the opportunity to participate in several workshops to help build a positive body image, develop self confidence, and make positive decisions for their future.
