At Citizen Schools, a WOW! is what students produce through their apprenticeships:  real-world products or performances that give value back to the community. A gourmet meal prepared and served, a guide to outdoor skills, a new school web site: each WOW! makes young people heroes in their community. Working on a team with volunteer Citizen Teachers, they develop 21st century skills like teamwork, technology, and communication and reward schools, volunteers, families and students with the opportunity to bask in pride over their accomplishments.

Each apprenticeship may showcase its own WOW!, a campus may hold events celebrating multiple apprenticeships, or related apprenticeships from all over the city may collaborate for a City-Wide WOW! In Boston, where 10 Citizen Schools sites host hundreds of WOW!s, a two-week-long celebration of learning each semester culminates in large, public events called Kids Invest, Kids Online, Kids Design, Mock Trials, and the Hip Hop Shop.
