Welcome to Longhorn Country!
I am excited to welcome you to the Jane Long Citizen Schools Campus. With the help of dedicated staff, teachers and volunteers, our program fosters a culture where achieving is cool, and we are very proud of the students whose hard work and perseverance show us what it means to succeed academically and personally.
If you are interested in enrolling your child in our program, learning more about how you can get involved, or if you just want to see us in action, please feel free to stop by our office or call me. I look forward to seeing you!

February 5th was our "Welcome Back to Citizen Schools" Exploration where the students tried their best to shoot down their teammates and Citizen Schools' staff in Laser Tag. Students had so much fun they didn't realize they were learning and practicing problem-solving and strategic planning skills.
February 13th was our first potluck of the Spring semester. In lieu of the ending of Intercession, students demonstrated their SpeakUP skills in the mini-WOW. The students chose their item that represents their team's value or their team's culture and presented to an audience of family, friends, and teachers in a commercial form. I have to say that these commercials are better than the ones shown during the Super Bowl!!!
Valentine's Day ended our Bring a Friend incentive program. Students who brought friends that stay in our program were entered into a special raffle and will attend a private pizza and movie party. Students on the VIP event list so far include:
- Hernan Alvitar, 6th
- Jose F. Rodriguez, 6th
- Kimberly Hoyos, 6th
- Lydia Mulgae, 6th
- Sona Traore, 6th
- John Delgado, 7th
- Peter Mulgae, 7th
- Peter Mulgae, 7th
- Richard Lopez, 7th
- Sylvester Brown, 7th
- Jairo Benavides, 8th
February 19th and 21st is time for the students to choose their Spring apprenticeships.
February 23rd, the School Navigation lesson on Asking Good Questions went live! Students visited businesses in the community of interest and practiced the art of asking good questions to discover the history of the business, how daily transactions and interactions work, and what qualifications are needed to be hired in the business.

Last semester Jane Long's Build a Bike apprenticeship, taught by Tom Tirado, volunteered at the Elves and More event. They built ~40 bikes in the span of 2 hours. The kids were AMAZING and impressed not only the other volunteers and the many bike technicians who were there representing bike shops around Houston, but also the founder of the organization and his staff.
Campus Director Mandy Haeuser was working on the bike donation for a couple of weeks but the kids really helped close the deal! |
