8th grade is a crucial year in a child’s education. Research shows that falling behind in eighth grade closes doors to high school success, college attainment, and rewarding careers. At an age when many of their peers are giving up, students in 8th Grade Academy at the Grady Middle School are developing the skills, relationships, and confidence that they need to navigate their educations and their lives. Through a diverse curriculum of data analysis, team building, high school visits, and college explorations, 8th Grade Academy students have the opportunity to examine both themselves and the world around them.
Rice University Exploration On Friday September 28th, 8th Grade Academy at the Grady Middle School took an exploration to Rice University.
This was the first trip to Rice for all of the students in the group. Highlights included a personalized tour by two Rice seniors; a trip to a geology lab, which included speaking with a professor and observing an experiment; and finally, a panel conversation and informal dinner with the Rice Student Volunteer Program.
While on the exploration, apprentices had the opportunity to ask questions about college courses and activities, what a typical day in the life of a college student is like, and how they should best prepare themselves in high school for the college admissions process.
