Citizen Schools apprentices proudly pose with the Texas-shaped garden they refurbished as part of their Keep Austin Beautiful apprenticeship last semester. The garden was originally created in the 1970s in memory of the school's namesake, naturalist Roy Bedichek.
Citizen Schools launched in Texas in the fall of 2005 at Grady Middle School in Houston. In our first semester we enrolled 79 students and maintained an average daily attendance rate of 90%—when the national average for middle school programs is around 45%. A year later, we added another school in Houston and expanded to Austin. Now, we're growing Texas-style: by 2010, we plan to operate a network of 10-12 sites throughout the state, bringing citizens into schools to lead hands-on learning projects all over the state.
Please explore the amazing work of these young people, who become apprentices with volunteer Citizen Teachers after school. There are many ways to get involved. We'd love for you to join our community. Please contact the Texas State Office for more information at (512) 476-1633.
