Jennifer Kane and Shruta Rege teach apprentices how to diagnose illnesses

Massachusetts Citizen Teachers from Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Jennifer Kane (featured above right)and Shruta Rege are turning their apprentices into “Cyber Surgeons” this spring. Edwards Middle School students are learning about various viral and bacterial diseases and medicines used to treat them. At the end of the semester, the Cyber Surgeon apprentices will take a virtual trip to the Amazon River Valley to diagnose and treat illnesses from that area.
Citizen Schools Teaches Rocket Science

David Mantus, Vice President at Cubist Pharmaceuticals has been bringing science to life at the Edwards Middle School volunteering as a Citizen Teacher. David’s “It IS Rocket Science” apprenticeship teaches students the basics of biology, chemistry, engineering, and physics needed to travel to space. Apprentices participate in hands-on experiments, discussions, demonstrations and team activities.
They build and launch rockets, fire cannons, freeze flowers, bananas, and other objects. By the end of the semester, students simulate a space mission conducted with the NASA Learning Center in Wheeling, West Virginia for the WOW!. Citizen Schools Draws Attention of White House Office of Science and Technology Policy

Nearly 150 leaders from across Massachusetts gathered at Citizen Schools’ headquarters to hear from Kumar Garg of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
“The real reason why we’re here is that Citizen Schools has been having incredible success,” explained Garg. “It’s a 15-year effort that has really provided a lot of impact. We wanted to be encouraging in that effort.” Read more…
