Citizen Schools New Mexico

Citizen Schools has launched its second semester in New Mexico!

Citizen Schools inaugurated two programs in New Mexico at Grant and Wilson Middle Schools.  Both are high-need schools in the center of Albuquerque, where 63% of the combined 1,388 students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Citizen Schools is serving over 120 students this semester and plans to help more than 200 youth during the academic year. Citizen Schools plans to operate on six to eight campuses across at least three communities by 2012.

Citizen Schools After school program in New Mexico

At Citizen Schools, volunteers from the community share what they know and love with young people in real-world projects. Students in New Mexico have learned about science from professionals at Sandia Labs, banking from Wells Fargo employees, personal finance from New Mexico Educators Credit Union financial analysts, science from BioPark docents, and developing new cereals from General Mills specialists.  Plus gardening, cooking, the beauty industry, civic engagement, computer programs, and many other skills from upstanding members of the greater Albuquerque community!

Citizen Schools entered two middle schools in Albuquerque as the extended learning provider for the New Mexico Integrated Services in Schools Initiative (NMISSI), sponsored by the New Mexico Community Foundation and Atlantic Philanthropies.  This initiative applies positive youth development and extended learning best practices to comprehensive school-based health programming, after-school and summer learning, and key family and student public and mentoring support.

Launch of Spring Semester

Our SECOND semester in Albuquerque began on January 22.  We thank all of the hard working apprentices, Citizen Teachers, Wilson employees, and Team Leaders who have made our first Fall and Spring semesters so successful.

The WOW! Celebration

Prepare to be WOW!ed again on May 8 and 9 as apprentices teach back what they learned from their amazing Spring apprenticeships!

On December 5, the volunteer Citizen Teachers and hard-working apprentices were honored by the students, parents, teachers, volunteers, and community leaders who attended and were WOW-ed.

Grant Middle School
The celebration took place at the beautiful African American Performing Arts Center across from the Fair Grounds from 6:30 - 9:00pm.  Guests enjoyed dance, musical theatre, and hip hop art, as well as presentations of outdoor skills, financial management, and community service, projects ranging from drawing to fuel cell technology to gardening, and more food and deserts than the guests could eat!  WOW, what a night.

Wilson Middle School
In the beautifully decorated "Big Gym" at Wilson, from 6:00 - 8:00pm students showcased their learning with display boards as well as presentations of dance, financial management, cereal creation, traditional southwestern skills, video documentary, and creating small businesses.  The smiles of apprentices and Citizen Teachers were contagious and the audience was WOW-ed all night!
