Citizen Schools operates a network of high-impact middle-school-based after-school programs located across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In just under six years, through a series of innovative partnerships with foundations, school districts, city and state government and community-based organizations, Citizen Schools has grown to serve over 500 students in seven schools in Lowell, Malden, New Bedford, Springfield and Worcester.
Massachusetts is Citizen Schools' first region to achieve scale outside of Boston, and has served as a learning laboratory for Citizen Schools' national expansion. Currently Citizen Schools' affiliates are piloting new and innovative partnerships with school districts, including supporting Salemwood School in Malden in its Expanded Learning Time efforts, engaging public school teachers in leading apprenticeships through Community Learning Centers funding in Worcester Public Schools, and being a part of the team at the Duggan Middle School in Springfield as it transitions to a Commonwealth Pilot School in 2008.
At Citizen Schools, volunteers from throughout the community share what they know and love with young people in real-world projects. Students in Massachusetts will learn about engineering from Raytheon, urban planning and design from AIA members, backyard ecology from Massachusetts Audubon volunteers and financial planning with Credit Union employees in Lowell, New Bedford and Springfield.
