To apply to the Citizen Schools National Teaching Fellowship--
1. Complete the Online Application
2. Upload your Cover Letter Write a strong, descriptive cover letter that highlights your experience, philosophy on education, youth development, and community development as well as how the National Teaching Fellowship fits in with your long-term career goals. Please do not copy and paste your essay answers into your cover letter.
3. Upload your Resume Your resume should include contact information, work experience, volunteer experience, extra-curricular activities, and any youth-oriented program experience.
4. Secure 3 Recommendations Each National Teaching Fellowship applicant must have three letters of recommendation written by three references to support her/his candidacy. These recommendations do not need to be submitted by the application deadline. Click here for the National Teaching Fellowship recommendation form. Note: Applicants for National Teaching Fellow positions in Massachusetts do not need to submit letters of recommendation. They will have the opportunity during the interview process to submit the names and contact information of three references who will be contacted by a Citizen Schools recruiter.
5. Criminal Background Check: In order to ensure that Citizen Schools is providing a safe environment for the children in our programs and to comply with state and local laws, we conduct criminal background checks on all program staff and volunteers. 6. Transcripts: Please have all undergraduate institutions submit 2 official transcripts in separate, sealed envelopes to the following address: Campus Talent Recruitment Team ATTN: National Teaching Fellowship Citizen Schools 308 Congress Street, 5th Floor Boston, MA 02210
Transcripts should be sent by regular postal mail. Unless specifically requested, it is unnecessary for transcripts to be sent overnight or express mail.
Application Review Applications will be reviewed every week. You can expect to hear from us regarding the status of your application within one week of submitting your application.
Telephone Interview Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a telephone interview.
On-Campus Interview Select candidates will be invited to an on-campus interview at the closest Citizen Schools program site. The On-Campus Interview consists of a Campus Visit and an interview with a Citizen Schools Campus Director. It gives candidates a chance to learn about the program on a deeper level by seeing a Citizen Schools program in action. It also provides Citizen Schools the opportunity to see candidates interact with students and program staff. Travel scholarships are available.
On-campus interview elements:
- Campus Visit: While shadowing a current National Teaching Fellow, you will have to opportunity to observe the Citizen Schools program and learn more about the Fellowship experience. The Campus Visit a significant part of the On-Campus interview process.
- In-person Interview with a Campus Director: This interview will give you the opportunity to discuss your interest and fit for the National Teaching Fellowship in more detail, and to learn more about Teaching Fellows supervision and support from one of our program site leaders.
- Curriculum Development: You will also be asked to develop and present a 10-week Apprenticeship Curriculum during your in-person interview. Click here for curriculum guidelines.
Application Timeline and Final Notification Applicants who applied by the May 1st deadline will receive final notification by June 13th. All candidates who submit their applications after the May 1st deadline will be considered on a rolling basis as positions are available. When to Apply The National Teaching Fellowship is a very competitive program so we encourage you to apply as soon as possible. Admissions are on a first come, first served basis. We will begin to accept applications for the National Teaching Fellowship on November 1, 2007. All National Teaching Fellows will begin their service in the summer of 2008. |
