What Fellows Do

Fellows spend two years pursuing three intensive educational professional development opportunities, gaining hands-on experience at middle schools, work experience with community organizations, and academic training through pursuit of a Master's degree.

Citizen Schools team leaders: As front-line educators and community builders, Fellows lead hands-on activities for small and large groups of middle school students. They recruit, train and support volunteer Citizen Teachers for hands-on apprenticeships; recruit students and families; plan and lead educational and culture-building activities; design and teach school success curricula; communicate with and engage parents with their children's education; and foster rich partnerships with school faculty and community organizations.

Community partnerships: Fellows work mornings at civic, cultural and educational partner organizations that bring the resources of their cities to urban children and their families. In these part-time professional experiences, Fellows lead interactive educational activities, organize and support educational field trips, conduct community outreach and training, and develop programs and curricula.

Master's Degree in Education: Through a partnership with Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, Teaching Fellows may earn a Master's in Education with a Specialization in Out-of-School Time. This specially designed 10-course program focuses on curriculum design, student assessment and instruction, community mobilization, and leadership.
