Leah Tuckman
Teaching Fellow

Current Employment: High school math teacher, East Palo Alto, California

Education: Haverford College 2003, B.A. Spanish and Education Reason for joining the Fellowship: “I was excited to have a social network of people who were committed to a cause. I was interested in math and specifically math for girls and students of color.”

Looking ahead: “I think I have another 5 or 10 years of public school teaching ahead of me. I’ve also been thinking about bilingual education and might want to get a Ph.D. in that some day.”

After Citizen Schools: Since 2005, Leah has taught 9th grade algebra at East Palo Alto Academy, a small charter school that serves a predominantly Latino population. She works closely with a group of 16–18 students through all four year s of high school in the school’s advisory system. “I see them at start and end of every day,” she says. “I advocate for them, help them with homework, help them navigate the college process—in many ways it’s similar to role I played at 8th Grade Academy as a Teaching Fellow.”
