Citizen Schools is working to professionalize the field of after-school education, developing a new cadre of leaders to work with youth in out-of-school time, extending students' formal learning in a interactive environment. Campus Directors
The "principals" of the after-school day, Citizen Schools Campus Directors are full-time professionals who manage the programs at our school-based sites nationwide. They serve as instructional leaders for program staff, coordinate volunteers teaching apprenticeships, and work with the school staff (teachers and administrators) to integrate learning in-school and out-of-school.
Team Leaders Team Leaders act as the "front line staff" of Citizen Schools, leading teams of 8-12 youth and planning core elements of our daily program. Team leaders fall into two categories:
National Teaching Fellows are full-time educators trained in educating adolescent youth and in organizing communities around learning. Fellows are engaged in a two-year, on-the-job leadership development program that prepares them to be professional educators, policy makers, and new voices in the field of out-of-school time education. All Fellows are college graduates, and most are also enrolled in a special Master of Education program for after-school educators, developed by Citizen Schools and the renowned Lesley University in Massachusetts. Teaching Associates work side-by-side with Teaching Fellows, responsible for leading their own teams of 8-12 students during homework time, explorations and apprenticeships. Teaching Associates, as part-time Citizen Schools employees, receive extensive training in leadership and youth development from Campus Directors and other trained Citizen Schools staff members.
In Boston, Citizen Schools is one of the partners in developing Expanded Learning Time, an innovative model in some Boston Public Schools. The team leaders in these pilot programs, the Extended Day Teaching Associates, have a unique role in both the Citizen Schools program and the public school itself. Learn more or apply now.
Citizen Teachers
Citizen Schools volunteer Citizen Teachers work side-by-side with trained Citizen Schools staff 1.5 hours a week sharing their expertise with students during apprenticeships. Citizen Teachers gain valuable experience while building students' confidence, poise, and academic skills. Each apprenticeship culminates in a WOW!, a product, performance, or presentation that adds value back into the community and provides apprentices with the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned.
