Citizen Schools is committed to developing and supporting our staff, apprentices, and volunteers to achieve our mission of educating children and strengthening communities. To honor this commitment to our children and families, we believe that all members of the Citizen Schools community should challenge themselves and their colleagues to develop a truly supportive and diverse organization.

Greater diversity should help us most effectively reach our social capital and community building goals—apprentices, families, volunteers and prospective staff members will trust an organization whose employees demonstrate cultural competency and a keen understanding of the opportunities and challenges inherent in working with diverse communities. The problem of unequal access to the a high-quality education that leads to a middle class lifestyle is still a leading American challenge; by building a more respectful, high-functioning and diverse community, we believe that Citizen Schools can serve as a role model for organizations and individuals aspiring to strengthen educational opportunities for children in communities across the nation.

In order to create a supportive, diverse environment that celebrates differences and commonalities and prepares staff to become leading educators and community builders, each member of the Citizen Schools community must recognize, understand, and make explicit the intimate connection between diversity, our core beliefs and our mission. As Citizen Schools continues to expand and evolve, the development of a supportive and diverse organization will help us reach our goals.
