Our brand new Citizen Schools program at the Ivy Hill Elementary School in Newark launched on January 22nd!
We are off to a terrific year and our Apprentices, Citizen Teachers and Staff are making wonderful strides to produce tremendous results. The talented staff and Citizen Teachers are sharing their expertise with students each day. This is done with a great deal of assistance.
Here's how you can help:
- Volunteer to be a Citizen Teacher
- Introduce your networks to Citizen Schools
- Visit one of our programs this fall and get inspired
- Contribute financial resources to enable us to operate more and better programs in New Jersey and Newark
The State of New Jersey is making valiant strides in addressing the needs of students and families during out-of-school time. As a collaborative leader in driving additional dollars, talent and attention towards the after-school sector, Citizen Schools is working with organizations like NJAfter3 and the New Jersey School Age Care Coalition to improve the educational resources available to students when the traditional school day ends. Citizen Schools launched its first program campus at the McKinley Community School in 2003 in partnership with New Brunswick Public Schools. In 2005, Citizen Schools launched its first state office, tasked with driving the growth and sustainability of a state-wide network of ten to twelve Citizen Schools campuses through 2010. In 2006, Citizen Schools launched its second program campus in New Jersey at the Mount Vernon School in Newark.
Citizen Schools has partnered with Newark Public Schools, members of Mayor Cory Booker's administration, and other local community stakeholders in developing a local growth strategy that will make Newark a Citizen Schools flagship city in the Garden State. The long-term growth strategy includes the launch of sustainable program campuses in the cities of Jersey City, Trenton and Camden.
Educating Children
- In addition to their apprenticeship learning, students spend about an hour a day working with trained educators on their homework and honing critical academic skills.
Strengthening Communities
- Whether it's cooking meals for resident families at the Ronald McDonald House in New Brunswick, collecting and distributing clothes for the less fortunate, or educating female adolescents about current issues like the HPV virus, Citizen Schools does not only benefit from volunteerism, it instills it as an expectation in its students and staff.
- In Newark, through actively participating in Councilman Ron Rice Jr.'s West Ward Collective, The City's Youth Development Committee, or The United Way of Essex/West Hudson's Vision Council, Citizen Schools is not only delivering a high impact program in schools; we are at the forefront of education reform and strengthening after-school learning opportunities throughout the Garden State.
The following individuals are leading the way for education reform in New Jersey through out-of-school time:
Jim McGlynn – Executive Director Liz Heffler – State Coordinator Matthew Greene – Campus Director, Vailsburg Middle School Christoper Garay – Campus Leader, Ivy Hill Elementary School Nadege Duvernay - Deputy Leader, Ivy Hill Elementary School Leopold Richardson – Campus Director, McKinley Community School Dennis Wilson – Teaching Fellow, McKinley Community School
