As we grow, Citizen Schools carefully studies a range of factors when weighing new school partnerships. A good fit is essential to getting good results for young people—as well as for Citizen Schools' long-term sustainable success. Measures we take include:
- State profile including data on population, economics, and investment in education
- Funding landscape including available public dollars, available corporate funding, access to foundations, and the individual donor pool
- Partners and stakeholders including after-school intermediary organizations or statewide networks, contacts and champions, national nonprofit presence, and potential partners. Strong corporate partners are particularly valuable in mobilizing funding and volunteers.
- Education reform climate including information on school choice, charter school legislation, small schools movements
- Strategic field-building including key legislative districts
- School district partnerships that emphasize school reform strategies, public funding availability, and strong leadership
- High-quality standards to maintain Citizen Schools' ambitious dosage and retention goals

"Having a national program at our school just makes the world bigger for us. We have the advantage of all of the experience of what really works brought into our program. It’s new to us—but it’s not a new experience for Citizen Schools."
