The Spirit of Service Is Alive and Well in California!

Updates and headlines you should know:

  • Serving California. This month we and over 100 volunteers across the Bay Area have committed to teach an apprenticeship, including "CSI" where student will use forensic science, logic, and reasoning to solve a middle school mystery; and "Soapbox Cars" where students will use everyday mathematics to design, build, and race a soapbox car!  Learn more about how 90 minutes a week can open the world to our students.
  • Making Headlines. Citizen Schools was profiled extensively for this month's Edutopia.  Many of our projects, students, staff, and partners across California are highlighted and the Citizen Schools model is extensively showcased, as well as our approach to branding to change lives.  Please feel free to watch, read, and pass them on!
  • Speaking of Service: A Civic Venture. We are also very happy to announce a new partnership with Civic Venture's Encore Fellow initiative.  We welcome Gina Cassinelli, former private sector leader from Hewlett Packard, who will be joining us over the next year as an Encore Fellow.  She will be focused on learning more about the non-profit sector and education fields, as well as on building our systems and marketing capacity as we grow.
  • On the Web. Citizen Schools California continues to build its online presence with stories from our students and fellow change agents about this work.  We invite you and your networks to join our Facebook page or to visit our updated Citizen Schools California web page to learn more.
  • Stimulus and CaliforniaAs many of you know, Congress passed a stimulus bill with dollars dedicated for education.  We're preparing a California analysis to share with you.  In the meantime, here is an outline of those dollars across the education pipeline, including for facilities, restoring funds from our state education budget cuts, higher education and tax breaks, and early education.  Here is also an analysis of the recently passed state budget, particularly the implications for public education.

Come and See Our Program in Action!

You are invited to visit our program on Thursday, March 26th from 3:30-5:00 pm at Thomas R. Pollicita Middle School in Daly City or Tuesday, April 21st from 4:00-5:30 pm at Kennedy Middle School in Redwood City.  Whether you are an educator, a philanthropist, someone who as thought about teaching an apprenticeship, or a new or veteran supporter of Citizen Schools we’d love to have you join us for a campus visit.

The afternoon will include a tour of the campus, visiting our academic and apprenticeship programs, and a conversation with the school principal, our students, the Executive Director of Citizen Schools California, as well as hearing from other Citizen Schools supporters.  To learn more or to RSVP (by March 20th for the Daly City visit) please contact Sarah Iles at 650.363.2720.

We look forward to another great semester and your continued engagement in our schools and communities.
